Gassy Cannabis Strains
what is gassy cannabis?
Gassy cannabis is some of the most sought-after among experienced smokers. Its intense, sharp aromas—diesel and pine, often balanced by funky, earthy base notes—make it instantly recognizable. For a long time, legacy growers tried to create the loudest, gassiest strains on the market because of their potent smell and consistent bag appeal. While regular consumers enjoy gassy strains because they hit hard, this means it’s also not the best option for new smokers—especially at higher levels of THC concentration.
Character profile
Gassy cannabis cultivars are difficult to characterize for two reasons. One—that hard-hitting diesel smell has been equated with high quality for so long that it’s been cross-bred into many different genetic lines, making it hard to find a cultivar that doesn’t have gassy characteristics. And two, from a chemical perspective, there is no single terpene profile that defines gassy characteristics. You’ll often find cultivars that smell “gassy” with high concentrations of caryophyllene—but you’re just as likely to find equally high amounts of pinene, myrcene, and even limonene.
what’s the high like?
Gassy cultivars are close cousins of earthy cannabis. Research suggests that two of the most common terpenes in the gassy family—pinene and caryophyllene—are great for reducing anxiety. However, these terpenes work differently than the sedating effects of myrcene: instead of heavy “couch lock” relaxation, these sharp-smelling terpenes are reported to cut through the noise and produce a more clear-headed experience—and might even reduce the anxiety and paranoia that some consumers get from too much THC.
